UH's Ako honored by WAC

Hawai'i women's soccer player Ambree Ako earned her second Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor this season.

Ako, a sophomore forward, led the Rainbow Wahine to victories over Boise State and Idaho this past weekend.

She scored a goal and had an assist in a 5-0 win over Boise State Friday and had two goals and two assists in a 7-0 victory against Idaho Sunday.


VOLLEYBALL

USA WINS IN JAPAN

Team USA won its first three matches at the FIVB World Cup in Hamamatsu, Japan, over the weekend. The surge included a come-from-behind win over NORCECA Continental Championship winner Cuba. Among the 12 teams competing in the tournament, the top three qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The U.S., with Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg starting at setter and former University of Hawai'i All-American Heather Bown in the middle, began with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-19 sweep of Peru.

Saturday, Team USA beat Cuba 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 15-11. McKinley graduate Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, starting setter at the last Olympics and another former UH All-American, is backing up Berg in Japan. Ah Mow started the last three games against Cuba.

Team USA kept its record perfect with a 25-21, 12-25, 27-25, 25-17 defeat of Poland Sunday.

After the first stage of the World Cup, only four teams remain undefeated with Italy, Brazil and Serbia joining the U.S. at 3-0. The U.S., ranked eighth in the world, plays Kenya today in Sendai.


SURFING

HAWAI'I TRIO OUSTED

Hawai'i surfers Bruce Irons, Fred Patacchia Jr. and Pancho Sullivan were eliminated from the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro yesterday.

The second and third rounds were completed in 4- to 6-foot waves at Imbituba, Brazil.

Sullivan and Patacchia were eliminated in the second round. Irons won his second round heat, then lost in the third round.

They were the only Hawai'i surfers in the contest. Former world champion Andy Irons of Kaua'i withdrew for personal reasons.

XCEL PRO POSTPONED

The final day of the Xcel Pro men's contest was postponed yesterday due to deteriorating conditions at Sunset Beach.

Contest officials have until Saturday to complete the last day of surfing.

UH WINS SHOOTOUT

The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming and diving teams won the two-day Lincoln Aquatics Shootout Saturday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbow Warriors posted an 8-0 mark in the two days, while the Rainbow Wahine followed up with a 7-0 record.

Hawai'i picked up 16 wins from seven athletes. They were: Grzegorz Mroz (200 free, 1:40.50; 500 free, 4:33.10, 4:32.18), Davis Kane (50 free, 20.60, 20.72; 100 free, 45.69, 45.08), Nicola Xella (200 breast, 2:02.62, 2:01.55); Emma Berry (200 free, 1:50.78; 1000 free, 10:24.53); diver Magnus Frick (1-meter, 387.90; 3-meter, 384.95); Brianna de Palezieux (200 breast, 2:20.33); diver Emma Friesen (1-meter, 307.10; 3-meter, 300.30).

Elsewhere, Hawai'i won three of five diving events at the two-day USC Trojan Diving Invitational completed Saturday at Los Angeles, Calif. Frick won the 1-meter springboard (365.55), Mats Wiktorsson won the 3-meter (380.80), and Friesen won the 1-meter (275.95).
