Cook wins Waikoloa Futures tennis event

Third-seeded American Lester Cook defeated fourth-seeded Australian Carsten Ball, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-3, yesterday to capture the $15,000 Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures. Ball, who was seeking his third singles title of the year, ousted Honolulu's Christopher Lam in the semifinals.
Cook, 23, is from Marina del Rey, Calif. He played for Texas A&M from 2001 to 2004 and majored in economics. He is No. 368 in the current ATP rankings and won his first Pro Circuit title last month at Laguna Niguel, Calif. He upset top-seeded Nicholas Monroe, ranked 356th, in Saturday's semifinals.
Cook and Shane La Porte beat Rylan Rizza and Ball for their third doubles title of the year. The scores were 6-2, 6-3.
The Pro Circuit moves to the University of Hawai'i this week for the Honolulu Futures. Monroe is again the top-ranked player in the main draw, which begins tomorrow.
Hawai'i's Ikaika Jobe (791) and Lam (No. 630) are in the main draw, along with 'Aiea's Dennis Lajola and Kaua'i's Brad Lum-Tucker, who received wild cards. Lam will play doubles with his younger brother, Carter. Hawai'i Open doubles champions Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen received a wild card into the doubles main draw.
Meanwhile, at the University of Hawai'i courts yesterday, top-seeded Sascha Heinemann, a UH junior, and former Hawai'i Pacific standout Jan Tribler earned berths in the Honolulu main draw.
Heinemann beat Hong-Tae Kim of Korea, 6-4, 6-2, and Tribler ousted Ross Sugiyama, 6-0, 6-0.
Heinemann and Tribler will be joined in the the main draw by the six winners of today's final qualifying matches. Among those still in contention are UH sophomore Andreas Weber and HPU junior Hendrik Bode.

STATE TOURNEY KICKS OFF
The First Hawaiian Bank/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Football Championships kick off Saturday with two Division I and two Division II games.
Saint Louis (10-0) is the top seed in Division I and Lahainaluna (8-1) is the top seed in Division II. Both have first-round byes.

MARTIAL ARTS
NOONS WINS WORLD TITLE
K.J. Noons of the Big Island defeated California's Nick Diaz to win the EliteXC organization's world championship in the 160-pound division Saturday at Corpus Christi, Texas.
Noons was awarded the victory — and the world title — when the ringside doctor stopped the bout after the first round due to cuts above both of Diaz's eyes. Noons landed several kicks and punches to Diaz's face throughout the first round.
Noons, who was raised in Kailua, Kona, but now trains in San Diego, improved to 6-2. Diaz dropped to 15-7.
The bout was televised live throughout most of the country on the Showtime cable network.
VOLLEYBALL
TOM LIFTS U.S. WOMEN
Logan Tom scored 19 points as the United States swept South Korea, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23, yesterday to remain undefeated at the volleyball Women's World Cup in Kumamoto, Japan.
Danielle Scott-Arruda had 17 points for the Americans, who improved to 8-0.
Honolulu's Robyn Ah Mow, a McKinley and University of Hawai'i alum, had a block, an ace and 24 assists as the starting setter for the U.S. Punahou alum Lindsey Berg also played at setter.
South Korea dropped to 2-6.
The tournament ends Saturday.
GOLF
HONOLULU CLAIMS CUP
The Honolulu team, with 9-year-old captain Allisen Corpuz leading the way, defeated Kaua'i, 9-3, yesterday in the inaugural Mayors' Challenge Cup at the Ala Wai Golf Course.
Corpuz, a fourth-grader at Punahou School, won the women's flight with a two-round net total of 130. She was playing to an 11-handicap.
Next year's tournament will be held on the Wailua Golf Course on Kaua'i.
