Immersion school to fete Japanese Culture Day

Students from Nawahiokalani'opu'u School, the Hawaiian language immersion laboratory school at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, will participate in Japanese Culture Day tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sangha Hall in Hilo.

The Nawahi School students from Kimiko "Pilialoha" Tomita's class will demonstrate how they are "Honoring Japanese Ancestors with Hawaiian Kanji." Students will sing Japanese songs and also be doing demonstrations on Hawaiian kanji.

Admission to Japanese Culture Day is free, and the gathering will feature a recognition ceremony of Hawai'i Island Japanese cultural treasures.

The program includes koto music by Shiho Watanabe, karaoke led by Carol Oshiro and a cooking demonstration by Colin Nakagawa of the Seaside Restaurant.

Demonstrations will include a tea ceremony by the Urasenke Hilo Association, and the event will feature a food festival with food products from Japan.
