Salvation Army Hawai'i will kick off its annual bell-ringing campaign today at Tamarind Park in Bishop Square.

The governor, lieutenant governor and mayor will contribute to the drive at the event, which runs from noon to 12:30 p.m. There will also be free entertainment.

The campaign, which features the Salvation Army's signature bell ringers and red kettles, raised $700,000 last year. The money goes to Salvation Army programs statewide.

This year, the nonprofit hopes to raise $750,000.

Some 200 bell ringers will be accepting loose change outside of stores statewide. Residents can also donate online, or set up their own online red kettle and solicit donations. To donate, go to www.salvationarmyhawaii.org.
