Not just for drying anymore: Natural Home Magazine offers these easy tips for harnessing the energy of the sun to clean your clothes. Since bleach can wreak havoc on delicates, try this instead:

  • Cover a stain with a pile of table salt, then drizzle fresh lemon juice over the salt.

  • Leave the fabric in the sun for several hours.

  • Gently brush off the salt and hand-launder as usual.

    SAVE THE PLANET

KIDS CAN HELP THE EARTH, TOO

Ocean artist Wyland has tips for kids on helping preserve the environment: Recycle your trash. Take shorter showers. Walk or bike short distances. Use nontoxic cleaners. Use a refillable water bottle. Find out more at www.WylandOceanChallenge.org.

Two good Web sites for kids who care about the planet: www.kids.nationalgeographic.com and www.kidscom.com.

    FINAL WORD

"I have a little tool at my house — you should get one — it's called the remote control. You can go from those channels that are showing too much of Anna Nicole Smith to, say, BBC News."

Tom Brokaw | as quoted in Time magazine
