Prudential Financial Inc. employees and their families from Honolulu will volunteer with Friends of the Missing Child Center — Hawai'i as part of the 12th anniversary of PRUDENTIAL GLOBAL VOLUNTEER DAY. The local effort to prevent abduction of children by helping families fill out identification packets and fingerprinting will be one of about 800 variously themed projects in more than 12 countries, ranging from rebuilding homes for the elderly to preparing meals at natural disaster shelters. Since 1995, more than 250,000 volunteers have devoted more than 1 1/2 million hours to more than 6,800 projects worldwide. This year, some 32,000 volunteers are expected to participate worldwide. The local child identification project is scheduled 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, at the state Capitol.
The Honolulu Filipino Junior Chamber of Commerce will host the 2007 YOUNG PROFESSIONALS CONVENTION Oct. 13, with workshops, job fair and exhibition and social mixer. Themed "Developing an Innovative Generation," the convention will focus on needed skills and challenges for the upcoming workforce generation, especially in the areas of marketability, competitiveness and career tools. About 150 young professionals and college students are expected to network with other peers, established professionals in various fields, and chamber members. It is scheduled from 2 p.m. registration; 3 p.m. convention, at Hilton Hawaiian Village, Coral Ballroom. Fees; college students, Jaycee members, and young professional prices available. Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann will be the keynote speaker at the International Council of Shopping Centers' Fifth Annual Next Generation Alliance Meeting and Reception. Hannemann speaks at 3:30 p.m. on "Public/Private Partnerships," followed by a panel discussion by Mel Kaneshige of The Outrigger Group; Jeff Arce, of the McNaughton Group, and John Behling of General Growth Properties, owner of Ala Moana Shopping Center and Ward Centers. The final speaker, at 5 p.m., will be Ed Korybski, executive director of the Honolulu Culture and Arts District. The event is scheduled in Red Elephant, 1144 Bethel St., in Chinatown. "Gateway Marketplace, The 'Ohana Showcase," a business "craft fair" trade show, will be offered 5-9 p.m., sponsored by the Hawai'i Women's Business Center. The event is scheduled to coincide with the monthly First Friday Downtown arts tour, with an emphasis on arts-related businesses. Also on hand will be experts from HWBC advising how participating businesses can get, and benefit from, more exposure. The event will be at 1041 Nu'uanu Ave. (Fee for display tables.)
