$25 million released for Oahu, Maui school repairs

O'ahu and Maui public schools — 84 of them — will be getting new roofs, air conditioning and other major repairs with $25 million in state funds.
"These ongoing repair projects are vital to the safety of our students and teachers and are an important supplement to the specific improvement and modernization projects we release funds for throughout the year," Gov. Linda Lingle said in a news release announcing she's releasing the state funds.
About $21 million will be used for O'ahu schools and $4 million for Maui campuses. The projects are scheduled to be completed by June 2009. The following is a partial list of the work scheduled:
On O'ahu, reroofing is scheduled for 'Aiea, Radford, Wai'anae, Farrington, Moanalua and Castle high schools; Moanalua and Wai'anae intermediate schools; and Mokulele, Hickam, Alvah A. Scott, Pearl Harbor, Pearl Harbor Kai, Salt Lake, Shafter, Waimalu, 'Ewa Beach, Leihoku, Makaha, Mauka Lani, Pohakea, Ka'a'awa, 'Aina Haina, Haha'ione and Kalihi Waena elementary schools.
Air-conditioning repairs are planned for Campbell, Castle and Farrington high schools; 'Ilima Intermediate; and Makalapa, Pearl Ridge and Mauka Lani elementary schools.
Drainage and irrigation improvements are planned for Kahuku High and Intermediate School; 'Aiea Intermediate; and Red Hill, He'eia and Makaha elementary schools.
Electrical upgrades will be made at 'Aiea and Kaiser high schools; 'Ilima, Moanalua and Wai'anae intermediate schools; and Makalapa, Moana-lua, Nimitz and Waimalu elementary schools.
On Maui, reroofing is scheduled for 'Iao Middle School and Lokelani Intermediate and Ha'iku, Kahului, Kihei and Lihikai elementary schools. Fire alarm upgrades are planned for Pu'unene School and Waihe'e and Pukalani elementary schools. Door and window replacements are planned for Baldwin and Maui High schools, as well as Ha'iku and Kahului elementary schools. Electrical upgrades are planned for Kalama Intermediate and Makawao Elementary.
Restrooms will be renovated at Kihei and Kula elementary schools, and new sewer lines will be installed at Maui High. Irrigation systems will be repaired at Kalama and Maui Waena Intermediate schools. Ha'iku Elementary will receive new water fountains, Wailuku Elementary will receive a new water meter, and new piping will be installed at Pa'ia Elementary.
