PEARL CITY— Pearl City's boys became the first team to win four consecutive league titles, but Kalani's girls won their first in eight years at yesterday's O'ahu Interscholastic Association air riflery championships at Pearl City High's range.

Kalani senior Teralyn Chang, a runner-up last year, took the girls individual title, while Pearl City senior David Lebowitz captured the boys crown.

"It's unbelievable," said Chang of the Falcons' team title.

The Falcons beat defending champion Pearl City — 1,661 to 1,629 — in the championship.

Kalani, the East champion, beat West runner-up Kapolei in one semifinal, while West champion Pearl City beat East runner-up Moanalua in the other.

In the boys championship, the Chargers beat Roosevelt, 1,653 to 1,557.

The Chargers advanced to the title match by beating Kalani, 1,700 to 1,644, while Roosevelt made it by defeating Kapolei, 1,553 to 1,529.

"Feels nice," Lebowitz said of the team title. "I was scared. It was windy and Roosevelt's good."

Chang, a fourth-year member of the team, said she got into air riflery because of older siblings who were into the sport. She wants to continue the sport in college and major in pharmacology.

Lebowitz had been exposed to guns since he was in the seventh grade through Boy Scouts. Although his school has won five of the last six titles, he admits he did not know it had an air riflery team when he was a freshman.

"I learned to shoot from scouting, but I picked up the finer points from here," said Lebowitz, who wants to major in aeronautics.

Teams have 10 entrants, but only the top seven count in team scoring.

The Kalani girls landed nine of the top 15 medalists.

Pearl City's boys had four of the top six finishers.

The state tournament is Oct. 23 at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
