Things got interesting for Kamehameha late against 'Iolani last night, but two touchdowns over the final five minutes took care of things.

Michael Hoke completed 14 of 27 passes for 215 yards, and Kamehameha rushed for 198 yards in a 35-21 victory over 'Iolani in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu interdivisional game at Aloha Stadium.

'Iolani, which trailed 21-0 at halftime, got within a touchdown at the end of the third period.

But Brandon Dumlao scored on a 22-yard run with 4:51 remaining and backup quarterback Edmund Kamano Jr. hit Brandon Demello with a 9-yard strike with 2:22 left, which extended Kamehameha's lead to 35-14.

"We did a little bit better in that fourth quarter," said Kamehameha coach David Stant.

Kamehameha, ranked No. 6 in The Advertiser's poll, improved to 4-2-1 overall and 3-2 in the ILH. 'Iolani fell to 4-4 and 3-2.

'Iolani's Kela Marciel hit Lionel Fujioka on a 7-yard slant with 8:08 left in the third to make it 21-7. The pair hooked up again for a 27-yard pass to make it 21-14 with 57 left in the third.

"Lionel is our go-to guy. Lionel got hot so we stuck with it," 'Iolani coach Wendell Look said.

Fujioka finished with eight catches for 140 yards.

But in the fourth period, the Raiders could only manage a 12-yard touchdown run by Marciel with the game already decided.

"They got a lot of fire power," said Look. "They have a lot of size and they wore us down. That's all it was."

Kamehameha, a Division I team, scored in the first half on a 5-yard run by Dumlao, a 17-yard interception return by Conrad Scheidt and a 2-yard run by Truman Ray Chun.

Chun's score capped an 11-play, 99-yard drive with 27 seconds left before halftime.

Despite the 21-point lead, Stant wasn't happy with his team's play.

"We played a terrible first half," he said.

Hoke was 11 of 21 for 187 yards in the first half for Kamehameha. The Warriors also gained 81 yards on the ground.

"We wanted to run the ball because we thought we could out-muscle them," said Hoke, a junior. "The passes were open because their defense is pretty basic."

'Iolani, a Division II team, had 101 yards of total offense in the first half. The Raiders punted three times, missed a field goal, lost the ball on downs and had an interception in the half.

"The kids played hard in the second half. We didn't play very smart in the first half," Look said.

Kaulupono Perez had 11 carries for 64 yards, Dumlao had 11 rushes for 48 yards, and Hoke had 10 for 50.

'Iolani's Marciel completed 11 of 29 passes for 214 yards. He also rushed 16 times for 65 yards.
