Colt Brennan's passing skills have never truly been in question, but who knew how versatile a package he actually possessed.

When he wasn't completing 29 of 46 passes for 425 yards and six touchdowns — another day at the office, to some UH fans — he was passing the accolades to his receivers and, for good measure, passing some of the most prolific quarterbacks in NCAA history in the record books.

Brennan's first touchdown pass, a 16-yard connection with Jason Rivers with 11:39 left in the first quarter, pushed Brennan past Florida's Danny Wuerffel for fourth place on the NCAA's all-time touchdown list.

His next, a 20-yarder to Ryan Grice-Mullins four minutes later, moved him past Louisiana Tech's Tim Rattay for third place.

Brennan hooked up with Grice-Mullins again in the second quarter and then with Davone Bess in the third to jump his UH predecessor Tim Chang for the No. 2 spot.

Brennan added two more TDs to bring his career total to 119, just two behind all-time leader Ty Detmer of Brigham Young. Brennan has thrown less than two touchdowns only once in the past two season (when he struggled with a sprained ankle against Utah State three weeks ago), which means chances are good that the senior quarterback will at least earn a share of the record by the time the Warriors finish tangling with Fresno State in two weeks.

As he has done, almost pathologically, since the beginning of the season, Brennan dismissed talk of his record-setting achievements.

"What I learned last year is that (you) don't pay attention to records or stats," he said. "This offense and this team is not about that, but about the 'W.' That is our mentality."

Still, that doesn't preclude Brennan from handing out accolades for his teammates.

"This was the best game I've ever been involved in as far as making plays with our receivers," he said. "They were unbelievable tonight.

They did a great job getting to passes even when I was throwing behind them."

Brennan also benefited from a receiving core that seemed determined to squeeze what they could from each reception, as when Grice-Mullins took a 5-yard pass and rocketed another 37 yards up the right sideline for the second of his three touchdowns last night.

"I wasn't necessarily the guy we were going to go to tonight, but I kept getting open and (Brennan) kept getting it in there," Grice-Mullins said. "That's the great awareness that he has and since we all know the system so well, we know that he'll take advantage of whatever opportunity we have."

Despite his impressive stats, Brennan's performance was admittedly uneven — a fact that he attributes to a solid defensive scheme by the Aggies.

"The came out with different zone looks, they tried all-out blitzes and they did a really good job of disguising their defenses," he said.

"They were tough, but we did what we had to do and our defense came out and did a great job, too."

Said head coach June Jones: "Colt was not at his best tonight, but six touchdowns is still pretty good."
