LIGHT & LOCAL
Juicy secret tucked away on Ward Ave.

By Carol Devenot

 •  Layer lovers' lasagna

The best-kept eating secret on Ward Avenue is the Honolulu Juice Co. at 932 Ward, seventh floor, at the Honolulu Club. Many club members eat their breakfast and lunches there, but it is also open to the public.

For people who work at Hawaiian Electric Co., Straub hospital, the Medical Arts or First Insurance, it's a stone's throw away.

Don't let their name fool you. This little dynamo of a snack bar has an extensive menu.

Their food is delicious, healthy and fresh. They have breakfast choices, coffees, soups, wraps, and gourmet and panini sandwiches. To order, call 543-3949. And you can sit in the Honolulu Club lounge.

Cliff and Cynthia Davis have operated the Honolulu Juice Co. since 2003. Cliff and his staff keep the place pumping daily; Cynthia makes her own hummus, dressings and salsa. Cliff treated me to his "to die for" Green Banana Bowl — a scoop of green banana sorbet topped with sliced bananas and granola.

This dish contains only 1.5 grams of fat. The ingredients consist of purified water, organic pureed bananas, coconut milk, dates, spirulina and agave. You can buy these items from Jeremy Daniel at Land of Organica, 900A Maunakea St; or call 548-2563 for more information.

Try the Acai Blue, Nutty Mango, Log, Guava Berry, Pina Colada, Ginger Breeze and Noni Lemonade sorbets.

You can also buy Green Banana Sorbet at Kale's, Down to Earth and The Source on O'ahu. Nature's Path granola is available at Kale's and Safeway stores.

Here's Cliff Davis' recipe.

GREEN BANANA BOWL

  • 1 scoop green banana sorbet

  • 1/2 cup Nature's Path Hemp Plus crunchy granola

  • 1 ripe banana, sliced

  • 1/4 teaspoon fresh-ground flax seed

Place 1 scoop of green banana sorbet in a small bowl, and top with granola, banana and flax seed. Makes 1 "I no like share" serving.

  • Per serving: 325 calories, 5 g fat, 1 g saturated fat, no cholesterol, 50 mg sodium, 68 g carbohydrate, 5 g fiber, 37 g sugar, 5 g protein
