NANAKULI — An early-morning fire yesterday that gutted a four-bedroom Nanakuli home was started by a stove that was left on, according to fire department investigators.

Fire department spokesman Capt. Frank Johnson said damage to the home at 81-734 Kahau St. was estimated at $250,000 to the building and $50,000 to its contents.

Four adults and two children were at home when the 12:45 a.m. fire started. No one was injured, Johnson said.

"One adult smelled the smoke, woke up and got everyone else up and out of the house," he said. "They didn't have any fire detectors ... They made it out by breaking one of the windows in the back and going out through it."

Neighbors said it was the second house fire on the street in less than a year.

The Hawai'i chapter of the American Red Cross was helping the displaced residents with temporary shelter as well as clothing and food.
