Chang struggles, is pulled in CFL loss

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Former University of Hawai'i star Tim Chang's first start in the Canadian Football League for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats was brief and less than stellar.

Chang lasted just one half — going 5 for 15 for 44 yards with one interception and no touchdowns — as the Toronto Argonauts (3-6) beat Hamilton (1-8), 32-14, yesterday in Hamilton, Ontario.

"I played horrible," Chang was quoted by the Canadian Press.

Jason Maas, who was demoted in favor of Chang this week, came on in the second half. Maas completed 8 of 15 passes for 161 yards and a TD. He did not have an interception, but fumbled once. The Tiger-Cats played another QB, Richie Williams, late in the game, and he completed 3 of 6 attempts for 54 yards.

Chang said in the Canadian Press report that nerves did not play a factor in his performance.

"You're definitely excited. You're nervous. You're anxious. All those things are going through your body," Chang said. "But I think just a couple balls got away from me early."

Hamilton head coach Charlie Taaffe said he will have to review the game tape to see what went wrong.

"We've got to find out if he can play quarterback in the CFL," Taaffe told the Canadian Press.
