Free clinics focus on cycling, running

Advertiser Staff

Like Mama said, free is always a bargain — especially when you're talking about expert advice on recreation.

Check out these offerings:

  • IT&B Tech Talk and Ride: In preparation for the annual Honolulu Century Ride, Island Triathlon and Bike offers a free tech talk followed by a short ride with expert cyclists Frank Smith and Jeri El-Swaify each Saturday (8 a.m. at IT&B) leading up to the ride.

Tomorrow's topics include "making your mountain bike street worthy" and "group riding techniques." Next week, it's "easy shifting techniques" and "how to safely ascend and descend hills," followed on Sept. 22 with "nutrition for long rides" and "what to eat and drink." Space is limited. Call 732-7227 for reservations.

  • Running Injury Prevention with Jaco Van Delden: Well-known physical therapist and triathlete Jaco Van Delden joins Christian Friis and Niketown in offering this free clinic focusing on injury prevention for competitive athletes and fitness enthusiasts training for the Honolulu Marathon. Tomorrow, 9:30 a.m. at Niketown.

For information and registration, call 381-8947 or visit http://jacorehab.com.

  • Niketown Keiki Training Runs: Niketown offers specialized running instruction for kids each Saturday leading up to the Sept. 23 Niketown 5K for Kids.

Runs also include activities, treats and free training logs. Classes run from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must sign a waiver to run along with Niketown Running Club leaders.
