The "Starcomm Prep Beat," a one-hour weekly radio show dedicated completely to high school sports, makes its debut today at 9 a.m. on KUMU AM 1500.
Co-hosted by David Kawada and Lad Panis, the show will feature previews for the weekend's high school football games, interviews with coaches and administrators, prep news updates and contests with prize giveaways.
Today's guests will include Kamehameha football coach David Stant, Punahou coach and associate athletic director Kale Ane, Farrington athletic director and O'ahu Interscholastic Association football coordinator Harold Tanaka, and Interscholastic League of Honolulu spokesman Georges Gilbert.
"The focus will be on football, but we plan to also touch on the other sports and news issues that come up," Kawada said.
HBA'S PALMER HELPS SERVE UP A VICTORY
Hawai'i Baptist sophomore Sarah Palmer went to the serving line last Thursday with her team trailing Maryknoll 11-10 in the third game of an extremely tight match.
The Eagles had just sided out for the rally point, and then the 5-foot-9 Palmer — a left-side hitter — ran off 15 straight service points to give HBA a shocking 25-11 victory to close the match.
The scores were 23-25, 27-25, 25-11.
"It was crazy," Eagles athletic director Deren Oshiro said. "Maryknoll had served for the match, and then we scored three straight to force the third game."
Palmer, considered to be one of HBA's top hitters, notched six aces during her run, which Maryknoll tried to break by calling two timeouts.
"She was really serving tough," Oshiro said. "She was sending it left, right, deep middle, just ripping it. Even after the timeouts."
The Eagles are 4-2 in the ILH; Maryknoll is 5-2.
