Kamehameha is breaking in a new coach. Punahou is breaking in new quarterbacks. But who will break through with a win today?
The Warriors and Buffanblu open the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I season at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is about 7:45 p.m. Damien and 'Iolani play at 5 p.m. in a Division II game.
Kahuku graduate David Stant makes his ILH debut as the Warriors' coach, succeeding Kanani Souza, Kamehameha's head athletic director. Stant spent the past 17 years coaching professional football in Japan's corporate league. He admits the transition to high school is "like night and day."
"It's a challenge every day, but the boys have been good," Stant said. "I think the boys will compensate for my weaknesses."
Punahou has been using two quarterbacks — juniors Cayman Shutter and Kimo Makaula — to succeed three-year starter Brett Kan (2,755 yards and 20 TDs), now at Princeton.
"It's an adjustment," Punahou coach Kale Ane said. "We've been fortunate to have someone so steady, so productive for three years (with Kan) that you kind of take things for granted."
While sharing time in non-league wins against McKinley and Leilehua, they have combined to complete 42 of 60 passes for 662 yards and eight touchdowns. Neither threw an interception.
Shutter has seven TD passes, but Ane said both have been pretty even.
"Both present different problems for our opponents," Ane said. "Right now, they're both doing great, the offense is clicking. As long that keeps going, we'll keep going with (both)."
Besides losing Kan to graduation, Punahou also lost two-time All-State receiver Miah Ostrowski, who is at Hawai'i. But the Buffanblu still return running backs Dalton Hilliard and Manti Te'o, who also will double at linebacker. Even defensive end J.J. Autele is expected to get touches at running back.
The Warriors, who went 1-0-1 in non-league play, return running back Truman Chun, the team's leading rusher with 771 yards last season. Also back is quarterback Michael Hoke, who passed for 911 yards and seven TDs.
"We're going to try to throw the ball more than we have in the past," Stant said. "That's where I think our strength is right now; it's in our receivers and running backs with our quarterback."
Punahou and Kamehameha split their season series last year.
Meanwhile, defending ILH champion Saint Louis appears to be back to form. The Crusaders, ranked first in The Advertiser's Top 10, went 3-0 in non-league play.
The Crusaders found a way to get two of their quarterbacks last season on the field at the same time this season. Returning from a collarbone injury is Micah Mamiya, the Offensive Player of the Year last season. His replacement in last year's Division I state title game was Tamatoa DeMello, who has moved to wide receiver.
"He still keeps in touch at quarterback a little bit," Saints coach Delbert Tengan said of DeMello.
Saint Louis also returns most of its offensive line, losing only Ana Tuiasosopo to graduation.
"Even though he's a big loss, we have four guys who had a lot of playing experience back," Tengan said.
The Crusaders lost three first-team All-State players on defense, including ILH Defensive Player of the Year Scott Smith. While the two ends, Smith and Solomona Aigamaua, have graduated, the Crusaders are strong inside with tackles Geordan Hanohano and Ryan Eastman. Both are Division I prospects; Eastman has already verbally committed to New Mexico State.
The Crusaders have a bye this week. They open next Friday against Punahou.
