Maui Land and Pineapple may not be canning pineapple anymore, concentrating instead on fresh fruit and land development, but it can still celebrate its plantation past.
This month marks its second annual Maui Pineapple Festival & Homecoming, on Saturday in Kahului. The event attracted 5,000 people last year.
The event will be the last chance for residents and visitors to tour the Kahului Cannery, which Maui Land and Pineapple shut down on June 30. It was the last working cannery in the United States. Throughout the day, guides will lead free narrated tours of the cannery.
On view will be an exhibition of plantation-life memorabilia. Former and current cannery employees are eligible to win door prizes, such as a weekend at the Kapalua Villas.
The festival also will feature a cooking contest, open to amateurs and professionals, which will center on a key ingredient — pineapple, of course. Contestants will vie for cash prizes and ... a weekend getaway at The Kapalua Villas.
Maui Land and Pineapple will set up a "company store" where people can buy logo merchandise from Kapalua Resort and Maui Pineapple Co. Also on the agenda are activities and interactive booths for keiki.
And of course food booths will serve dishes featuring pineapple, such as chicken curry sandwiches with pineapple salsa, and beef-and-pineapple kabobs.
