Rainbow women win home finale, 13-9

Junior Kelly Mason scored a match-high five goals, leading the fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team over No. 8 UC Irvine, 13-9, yesterday in its final home match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Senior Anna Sieprath scored once, had three assists, and two steals for UH (14-5 overall, 7-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation). Junior Angela Turnbull and sophomore Leonie Van Der Molen also had two goals each.
Freshman Sara Gralitzer finished the match with a season-high 14 saves, three shy of the program's single-match record.
In addition to Sieprath also playing her final home match was senior Emily Cox. Robin Harney, Megan O'Linn, and Kristin Swanson also will not return next season. Sieprath, a four-year starter, will finish her career as the program's all-time leader in assists.
After leading by one goal after the first, UH dominated the second quarter, scoring five times and holding the Anteaters to just one goal. Sieprath's pass to Van Der Molen helped the Rainbow Wahine extend their lead to 9-4 at the half.
UC Irvine (13-8, 4-5) closed to 11-7 entering the fourth period, where both teams scored two goals apiece.
UH will begin a seven-match road trip with an MPSF match against No. 6 San Diego State on Tuesday at the Aztec Aquaplex.
SOFTBALL
HPU SWEEPS TWINBILL
Hawai'i Pacific rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 4-3, yesterday in the first game of a Pacific West Conference women's softball doubleheader at HPU Field.
Casey Sugihara's one-out single scored Puna Waiolama from second base to tie the game at 3. HPU's winning run scored with two outs on an error by the second baseman.
Tajia Acierto hit a solo home run for HPU (28-5); Bettye Doering hit one for BYUH (8-27).
Sherise Musquiz fired a one-hitter to lead HPU, 8-0, in the second game that was shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.
Musquiz struck out two and walked two. Teammate Nicole Kalakau want 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
UH-HILO SPLITS
Brittany Dock's run-scoring single snapped a 5-all tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Hawai'i-Hilo held on to beat Grand Canyon, 9-7, yesterday to split a Pacific West Conference women's softball doubleheader at Phoenix, Ariz.
UH-Hilo added two more runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly.
Tessa Truong hit a two-run home run, and Jerica Faasua added a solo homer for UH-Hilo (6-8 overall, 5-7 PacWest).
Michelle Farrell fired a four-hitter as the Antelopes (18-17-1, 10-6) rebounded in the second game, 11-1. The contest was shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.
BASEBALL
HPU STOPS UH-HILO
Pinch-hitter Cheynne Hirota's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning rallied Hawai'i Pacific over Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-3, last night at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Hirota's one-out hit gave HPU a 3-2 lead. Danny Lee added an RBI groundout.
UH-Hilo's Michael Higa batted 3 for 4. Teammate Alvis Satele added a solo home run.
HPU improved to 24-12-1. UH-Hilo dropped to 11-15.
