Fujikawa among 80 pros to tee off at Mid-Pacific Open

Tadd Fujikawa will make his first local appearance as a professional since the Sony Open in the 50th Mid-Pacific Open starting Thursday at the Mid-Pacific Country Club in Lanikai.
Fujikawa will be paired with defending champion Darren Summers, Kamehameha School's Alika Bell and University of Hawai'i's Travis Toyama, who won the State Amateur last month. They will tee off at 12:24 p.m.
Eighty pros, the largest in tournament history, are entered, including Aloha Section PGA player of the year Kevin Hayashi, and past champions David Ishii, Regan Lee, John Lynch, Casey Nakama, Beau Yokomoto, Larry Stubblefield and Lance Suzuki.
Besides Toyama, heading the championship field will be Brandan Kop, the last amateur to win the 72-hole event in 1995. A banquet honoring the previous champions will be held tonight at 6 p.m.
Among the junior golf standouts entered with Bell are Warrior teammate TJ Kua, Punahou School's Bradley Shigezawa, Maryknoll's Alex Chu and Lorens Chan of 'Iolani School.
For the first time, females are playing in the event — Punahou's Stephanie Kono and Anna Jang, the defending state girls champion.
The field will be cut to 50 percent in the professional, senior pros, championship, A- and B-flights after 36 holes. They will all play from the same set of tees.
Sunday's final round will start at 7 a.m. with the leaders going off around 9:30 with the professional winner getting $13,500. Admission is free.

WAI'ANAE TRIUMPHS, 3-1
Tifanie Tapene blasted a two-run home run in the first inning and Samantha Kuakina scattered 10 hits in her complete-game victory as Wai'anae beat host Waialua, 3-1, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association softball game.
Waialua's Samantha Keao and Althia Dicion had three hits apiece.

Lianna Bajarin fired a two-hitter and Charisse Tanabe hit a solo home run in the fifth inning as Roosevelt blanked Castle in an OIA softball game at Stevenson Middle School.
Leisha Liilii led Castle with two hits, including a triple.

Mary Ann Gails added two hits for Moanalua.
