In a game where both starting pitchers had their way, Mililani's Celina Garces decided to take one the other way leading off the bottom of the seventh inning yesterday in a victory over Campbell.
Garces lined an opposite-field triple just fair down the right-field line and scored one out later on an error as host Mililani beat Campbell, 1-0, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West softball game.
"I felt so happy and so proud of my teammates because they pulled through and really pushed hard in this game," said Mililani's Makani Duhaylonsod, who tossed a four-hitter.
Garces' triple came on a 2-1 pitch from Campbell's Breanne Patton, who allowed five hits and struck out two.
"Before she went up to bat and when we were in the huddle, we just told them to move up and in (in the batter's box)," said Mililani coach Rose Antonio. "Breanne was throwing a lot of outside pitches and she just went with the pitch and that was a great hit."
Garces added: "I was just looking for a good pitch to hit and I got one. It was high and outside and I just went with it."
The Sabers' infield moved in and Patton got the next batter to ground out to second with Garces holding third.
On a full-count pitch, lead-off hitter Kristi Oshiro chopped a grounder, which the second baseman fielded, but her backhand flip was wide of the first baseman and rolled toward the Sabers' dugout. Garces, who hesitated coming down the line, then came in to give Mililani the victory.
"I waited because at first coach Rose said make sure the ball passes the infield, so I waited a while before I went," Garces said.
Antonio said she would have preferred Garces break for the plate right away.
"The infielders were pinching in so we wanted it to go through," Antonio said. "But that kind of play going to the right, we should go home. I guess she was waiting for the ball to go through the infield."
Mililani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 8-1. Campbell, tied for No. 3 in the poll, fell to 6-3.
"It's great for us because we have to get ready for the (OIA) playoffs," Antonio said. "The playoffs are just two weeks away and these are the kind of games we're going to be playing. Real tight games."
Duhaylonsod, a senior right-hander, walked none and struck out five. She threw 54 of her 72 pitches for strikes.
"I was pretty much mixing it up," Duhaylonsod said. "All the pitches were working."
The only serious trouble she got into was in the top of the seventh when she put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Duhaylonsod got a called third strike to retire the side.
"She had a great game," Antonio said. "She pitched very well, hitting her spots and the defense backed her up real well, too."
Patton, a right-hander, held Mililani to 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. She hit Oshiro with pitches twice and issued an intentional walk to Duhaylonsod.
Campbell coach David Perreira allowed catcher Anuhea Yamaguchi to call the game.
"It was the first time I let her go ahead and put the game in her hands and control the game, and she did an excellent job," he said.
The Sabers fell out of second place in the Red West, but Perreira still was satisfied with the effort.
"I'm happy we came out hungry to play," he said. "The past few weeks we kind of had some internal struggles with our team, playing as one team."
