UH sailors qualify for nationals

The University of Hawai'i women's sailing team clinched a berth to the nationals yesterday by finishing second in the Pacific Coast Sailing Conference Championships at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
Stanford won yesterday's regatta and will join UH at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's National Championships at Newport, R.I., May 25 to 27.
Sailing for the Rainbow Wahine were Becky Mabardy (skipper), Darla Baldwin (crew) and Erin Magee (crew) in the A division and Hannah Tuson-Turner (skipper) and Jackie McLoughlin in the B division.

NEVADA SWEEPS UH
Pinch-hitter Michelle Beach's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh capped a five-run rally that lifted No. 24 Nevada over No. 15 Hawai'i, 7-6, in the second game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Reno, Nev.
In the first game, Katie Holverson pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks to help the Wolf Pack prevail, 4-1.
The sweep allowed Nevada (31-14) to move into first place in the WAC with a 9-2 record. UH (31-13, 7-3) fell from first to third behind Fresno State (8-3).
Kate Robinson, who gave up six hits in Nevada's seventh-inning comeback, hit a three-run homer in the first inning to tie Hawai'i's career home run record of 38 shared by Stacey Porter.
Robinson, Brandi Peiler, Clare Warwick and Audrey Andrade each had two hits for the Rainbow Wahine, who led 6-0 entering the bottom of the fifth.
In the opener, Valana Manuma singled home UH's lone run.

DANIELS, FAAGAI QUALIFY
University of Hawai'i sophomores Brittani Daniels and Alana Faagai each threw the discus 156 feet, 3 inches yesterday to qualify for next month's NCAA West Regionals.
Daniels and Faagai were competing with the rest of the team at the Beach Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays in Long Beach, Calif.
