WAIPI'O — If there is a high school softball player in Hawai'i who has established herself as a "big-game pitcher," it is Mililani senior Makani Duhaylonsod.

The 6-foot right-hander delivered yet another huge victory last night, tossing a one-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk and adding a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to help the Trojans defeat arch rival Leilehua, 4-0.

Mililani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 9-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division with two regular season games remaining.

No. 7 Leilehua, which handed the Trojans their only loss, fell to 8-3.

"This feels really good, because we all wanted to come back from that loss," said Duhaylonsod, who won the state championship game as a freshman and the OIA title game last season. "I felt I had to pick up all my energy and focus on this game."

The only hit she allowed was a one-out single to center field by Ciara Paracuellas in the bottom of the first inning. The next batter, Kristen Campogan, reached on a fielder's choice error and the Mules advanced the runners to second and third, but Duhaylonsod ended the threat with a strikeout.

She walked the leadoff batter in the second inning, and the runner advanced to second on Amber McGraw's sacrifice bunt but was thrown out at third trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt. After that, Duhaylonsod retired the final 15 batters of the game in order.

"We told our girls, 'Wait for your pitch, don't hit hers,' " Leilehua coach Stacy Araki said. "We told them to watch her change-up, that if you have no strikes, don't swing at it. But she played a hell of a game."

The Trojans gave Duhaylonsod the only run she really needed in the top of the third, when Kristi Oshiro hit a one-out single to center field and advanced to second when the ball was misplayed. Oshiro took third on Chanelle Senas' bunt single, then scored on Courtney Senas' sacrifice fly to center.

Duhaylonsod then followed by slamming a towering shot well over the left-field fence to make it 3-0.

"It was high and down the middle," she said of the 1-0 pitch.

Chanelle Senas drove in Celina Garces from third base with a groundout to second with two outs in the seventh for the final run.

Breanne Patton blasted a home run and drove in two runs, and Collette Black batted 3 for 3 with two RBIs as the Sabers beat the visiting Marauders in a game shorted to five innings because of the mercy rule.

Campbell's Loreen Egdamin and Kylie Tavai had two hits apiece, while Leinna Kalua and Katie Manuma drove in two runs apiece. Sina Nuu drove in three runs for Waipahu.
