OAKLAND, Calif. — Daric Barton wasn't bothered by the booing he heard in the second inning after dropping Miguel Olivo's fly ball in foul territory. When Olivo homered two pitches later, Oakland's first baseman could only shrug his shoulders.

"It's not the first time it's happened in my life and it's not going to be the last," Barton said. "It's part of the game and you have to have a short-term memory and get over it."

Barton did that, going 3 for 5 with a single, double and triple in the Athletics' 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals yesterday.

Baldwin High alum Kurt Suzuki singled home Chris Denorfia with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and the A's knocked around the Royals' bullpen for the second straight day to deny starter Zack Greinke his fourth win of the year.

Barton then tripled home Suzuki to give the A's a 6-4 lead.

Six players had at least two hits for Oakland, which set a season high with 16 hits a night after getting 15 hits against Brian Bannister and four relievers.

"We expect that out of ourselves," Barton said. "We're always having people on base, it's just whether or not we've got the guys in at the right time. If you look at the pitchers we've faced so far and the pitchers we've beat, there's nobody we can't beat."

A day after scoring eight runs in the eighth inning of a 13-2 win, Oakland rallied from a 4-0 deficit and scored three times in its final three at-bats.

Joey Devine (2-0) pitched two shutout innings of relief to earn the win while Huston Street recorded the final four outs for his fifth save in six chances.

Jose Guillen also homered for the struggling Royals, who managed only four hits over the final seven innings. Kansas City has lost three straight and four of five after opening the season 8-5, its best start since 2003.

BLUE JAYS 3, TIGERS 2: Alex Rios homered, Marco Scutaro drew a bases-loaded walk and Dustin McGowan (1-1) pitched a season-high seven innings, allowing two runs and seven hits, as host Toronto beat Detroit to snap a six-game home losing streak.

Twins 3, Indians 0: Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer, Nick Blackburn (1-1) earned his first major league win, giving up eight hits over 7 2/3 innings, and host Minnesota backed the right-hander with four inning-ending double plays to turn back Cleveland.

Rays 5, White Sox 0: Andy Sonnanstine (2-1) threw a three-hitter for his first career complete game, and Eric Hinske, Jason Bartlett and Akinori Iwamura hit run-scoring singles in the third inning for a 3-0 lead as host Tampa Bay beat Chicago for the first time in the teams' last seven meetings.

RED SOX 5, RANGERS 3: Manny Ramirez hit a two-run shot for his 496th career homer after slumping partner David Ortiz tied it with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Boston beat Texas for its seventh victory in eight games.

Orioles 6, Yankees 0: Brian Burres (2-1) gave up five hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings, Jim Johnson allowed just one hit the rest of the way for his first career save, and Ramon Hernandez and Aubrey Huff each drove in two runs as host Baltimore handed New York its third straight loss.

Angels 4, Mariners 1: Ervin Santana (3-0) allowed a run — Adrian Beltre's solo homer in the seventh — and three hits over eight innings, retiring 20 of his first 21 batters, and Erick Aybar sparked a three-run fourth with a two-run single as host Los Angeles beat Seattle.

Braves 4, Dodgers 1: Just hours after being recalled from Triple-A Richmond, Chuck James (1-1) allowed one run in five innings and Mark Teixeira's two-run single highlighted a four-run fifth inning as Atlanta beat Los Angeles for its third straight victory. Ex-Brave Andruw Jones hit his first homer of the season for the Dodgers.

METS 4, PHILLIES 2: Oliver Perez (2-0) scattered four hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings, Jose Reyes hit a two-run homer and David Wright had a two-run double as visiting New York beat Philadelphia for the fourth straight time after losing nine in a row over two seasons.

Brewers 5, Reds 3: Bill Hall sent a full-count pitch from David Weathers (0-2) into the gap in right-center for a two-run double that broke a 3-all tie in the top 10th inning, helping Milwaukee beat Cincinnati and improve to 4-0 in extra-inning games this season.

Cubs 13, Pirates 1: Jason Marquis (1-0) won for the first time since last Sept. 16, allowing a run and six hits over six innings, and host Chicago got home runs from Derrek Lee and Daryle Ward to beat Pittsburgh for the eighth straight time. Nate McLouth extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a fifth-inning double for the Pirates.

Giants 3, Cardinals 0: Tim Lincecum (3-0) gave up six hits and struck out five in seven innings, and Aaron Rowand hit a solo home run and an RBI single as host San Francisco beat St. Louis to end a three-game losing streak.

DIAMONDBACKS 10, PADRES 3: Chris Young singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and host Arizona scored six runs in the eighth inning to rout San Diego for its fourth straight victory and improve to a major league-best 13-4, the best start in its 11-year history.

Rockies 3, Astros 2: Brad Hawpe singled in the go-ahead run in the fifth, Aaron Cook (2-1) allowed two runs — one earned — and four hits over seven strong innings and visiting Colorado (9-8) beat Houston for its fourth straight victory to climb over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Marlins 6, Nationals 5: Wes Helms grounded a single up the middle off reliever Saul Rivera (1-1) to score Dan Uggla from second with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Florida beat Washington and end its two-game losing streak.

SHORT HOPS

Yankees: New York reliever Kyle Farnsworth was suspended for three games and fined yesterday for throwing a fastball behind the neck of Boston slugger Manny Ramirez, who had hit two homers earlier in Thursday's 7-5 win over the Yankees.

Farnsworth said he was "shocked" by the decision and would appeal the penalty, which was to start last night against Baltimore. He will be eligible to pitch until a hearing is held.

"I can't agree," he said. "We will appeal, and then we'll go from there."

Manager Joe Girardi also expressed his shock at the ruling by Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball. The amount of the fine was not disclosed.

Twins: Shortstop Adam Everett was placed on 15-day disabled list by Minnesota because of a strained right shoulder.

The move before yesterday's game was retroactive to Tuesday, making Everett eligible to be activated on April 30. Corner infielder Brian Buscher, who will give manager Ron Gardenhire another left-handed bat off the bench, was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to take his roster spot.
