Pascual pitches Kamehameha past 'Iolani, 5-2

Kamehameha left-hander Chris Pascual was on top of his game after a rough first inning yesterday against 'Iolani.
He got offensive help from the bottom of the Warriors' batting order.
Pascual pitched a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts, and Michael Tokunaga and T.C. Campbell each drove in two runs as Kamehameha beat 'Iolani, 5-2, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu double-elimination tournament game at Ala Wai Field.
"He did settle down, was in command most of the game, pitched through some big situations," said Kamehameha coach Vern Ramie. "Just a quality outing from Chris."
The junior allowed three hits and two unearned runs in the first inning. One run scored on a throwing error by the third baseman and another came in on Reyn Nagamine's single to right.
"He threw well in the first inning," Ramie said. "We didn't play real good defense behind him. If we make a play or two that inning, you've got a chance to get out of it without them scoring."
Kamehameha, the No. 5 seed, improved to 7-7-1 overall and 1-0 in the tournament. No. 4 'Iolani dropped to 8-7 and 0-1.
Tokunaga got a rare start in left field for Kamehameha yesterday and batted 3 for 3 from the No. 7 spot in the order.
The Warriors tied the score at 2 in the second on run-scoring singles by Tokunaga and Campbell, the No. 9 batter.
Tokunaga said his previous start came in the first round of the season against Pac-Five.
"Every day I just try to come out to the baseball field with the same mentality," he said. "Just always be ready because I never know when my chances are going to be."
The Warriors scored the go-ahead run in the fourth when Tokunaga singled and the ball got past the left fielder, allowing Kalei Hanawahine to score from first. Tokunaga scored on Campbell's ground ball, which was bobbled by the shortstop.
Tokunaga capped the scoring with an RBI single to left in the fifth.
"The last half of the season, we did get some contributions from the bottom of the order," Ramie said. "Early part of the season, we weren't getting much there. It's really helped us. Kept some big innings alive."
Pascual threw 83 of his 121 pitches for strikes. He walked one and hit a batter.
"All my pitches were like off at first," Pascual said. "And then I stayed focused and strikes just came."
He retired 10 of the final 11 batters, including six on strikeouts. The only Raiders' base runner during that stretch got on after a strikeout and passed ball.
"He had some quality hitters he kept off-balance today," Ramie said. " 'Iolani is a good-hitting team."
As for the high number of strikeouts, Pascual said: "Normally it's fly balls or ground balls. Everything was just on today."
'Iolani stranded two runners in the first, third and fourth innings. It finished 1 for 8 with an RBI with runners in scoring position.
"I was just disappointed we didn't hit the ball better," said 'Iolani coach Dean Yonamine.
'Kamehameha will play Saint Louis on Tuesday in the winners' bracket. 'Iolani will face Maryknoll.
