Colt Brennan has the ending figured out. This weekend, he gets to read the script.
The National Football League draft is Saturday and Sunday, and Brennan, a former Hawai'i quarterback and 2007 Heisman Trophy finalist, is expected to be selected.
But where? And by whom?
"You really don't know," said Brennan, noting several teams have shown strong interest. He said his close friend, Matt Leinart, never interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals, who selected the former USC quarterback in the first round. Another friend, Trent Edwards, was drafted by the Buffalo Bills without receiving a personal workout.
Predictions range from Brennan being selected in the second round to not at all.
"I'm probably more prepared to not be drafted than anyone else," said Brennan, who joined Colorado and UH without a scholarship. At every level — high school, prep academy, junior college and UH — Brennan has been successful. As a junior in 2006, Brennan had the best statistical season by a quarterback in NCAA history.
"Maybe I have to walk on to an NFL team," Brennan said. "If that's what it takes, so be it. It only makes me stronger. Basically, it makes my story that much better down the road."
More than likely, Brennan, who displayed accuracy and arm strength at the NFL Scouting Combine in February and Pro Day in March, will be drafted in the middle rounds.
"I'm not anxious or anything," Brennan said of his draft status. "I think I'd be way more anxious if I were one of those Matt Ryan-top-15 picks. I know after this weekend, I get to play football. That's always the easiest part."
A little more than two weeks ago, Brennan underwent surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his right hip. The procedure, performed at the Vail (Colo.) Valley Surgical Center by a renowned surgeon, involved cutting through muscle. Because of the internal stitching, Brennan is on a limited rehabilitation program.
He said the day after the surgery, he was in discomfort. "If I sat down for a certain time, my leg would get uncomfortable," he recalled. A few days after that, "the ailments were gone. Each week, I'm getting better and better."
He said he rides an exercise bike and does light weight-lifting. He said if all goes well, he hopes to be able to participate in one of the later mini camps. He expects to be 100 percent by July.
Brennan said his family will spend the weekend at a rented beach house.
"We'll do some family stuff," he said. "Me and my dad will hang out. I won't be one of those guys posted up to the TV, waiting and waiting. I'll take is as a somewhat normal weekend."
