Pu'ukohola Heia National Historic Site will be celebrating its 36th anniversary with their annual Ho'oku'ikahi Establishment Day Hawaiian Cultural Festival on Aug. 16 and 17.
The celebration runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
The site was established as a National Historic site on Aug. 17, 1972.
The stone heiau at Kawaihae is one of the last major sacred structures built in Hawaii before outside influences altered ancient Hawaiian life permanently. It was constructed in 1790-1791 by Kamehameha I and is said that it ultimately led to his unification of the Hawaiian Islands and its people by 1810.
Cultural demonstrations and workshops, all open to the public, will be held during the celebration in Pelekane located near the beach below Pu'ukohola Heiau.
