The Aloha Surf Lifesaving team from Hawai'i placed second in the B Chapter of the USLA National Lifeguard Championships last weekend at Manhattan Beach, Calif.
More than 500 competitors representing 33 teams from around the country participated in the three-day event.
The Aloha Surf team placed second out of 15 teams in the B Chapter, which was for smaller organizations.
The larger organizations competed in the A Chapter, although competitors from the A and B chapters went against one another in the individual events.
Smith Point (New York) scored 200 points to win the B Chapter. Aloha Surf scored 127, which was second in the B Chapter, and sixth overall.
It was the second consecutive year that Aloha Surf placed second to Smith Point.
"We didn't fulfill our obligation of getting first place, but we maintained second and that's not an easy thing to do," team captain Matthew DuBrule said. "The water temperature was warm, and there was a little bit of surf, so that helped us."
The top scorer was Zsolt Szadoszki, who moved to O'ahu from Hungary earlier this year. He won both the open surfski race, and the 30-34 age group surfski race.
Other standouts for Aloha Surf:
According to DuBrule, Smith Point scored most of its points in the running events, while Aloha Surf fared well in the ocean events.
Also, Smith Point scored more than 50 points in the women's races, while Aloha Surf did not have any females.
