Hilton Hawaiian Village ending Mass for visitors
Hilton Hawaiian Village will discontinue offering a 9 a.m. Mass service on Sundays to visitors.
Sts. Peter & Paul Church, a Roman Catholic parish near Ala Moana, had offered the visitor Mass ministry for 40 years.
"The new management told us they no longer wanted the church services there because we don't bring in any money to them," said the Rev. David Travers. "We asked if there was any way we could pay, but if we wanted to, it would be $850 a week, and we don't make that."
In a statement, Hilton's resident manager Michael Wilding, responded: "Due to the business and economic challenges we are facing this year in the visitor industry, we could no longer offer our events facilities at no charge."
Travers said the church is hoping to use another nearby hotel for Sundays. As of September, there will be just one Mass in that part of Waikiki: Fort DeRussy chapel offers a Saturday vigil Mass. Otherwise, if Catholic visitors want to attend a Mass on Sunday, St. Augustine Church is located on Kalakaua Avenue on the diamondhead side of Waikiki, near the zoo.
