Showing off some razor sharp execution in its season opener, Kamehameha blitzed Kahuku, 35-0, last night in a nonleague football matchup of perennial Hawai'i high school powers.

A crowd of about 3,000 at Aloha Stadium watched Ryan Ho take a swing pass from quarterback Edmund Kamano Jr. in the right flat on the game's first play from scrimmage and race 80 yards for a touchdown.

Kahuku fumbled the ball away five plays into the ensuing possession, with Warriors linebacker Tamatea Graham recovering on the Red Raiders' 38. Kamano's 2-yard bootleg TD run helped put Kamehameha up, 14-0, with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter.

Another Kahuku fumble, recovered by defensive back Pi'ikea Kitamura, helped set up Kamano's 26-yard touchdown pass to Maika Mataele, which helped give Kamehameha a 21-0 lead with 1:54 still left in the opening quarter.

The Red Raiders had their best scoring opportunity of the night early in the second quarter when George Kaka forced a fumble on a punt return that was recovered by teammate AJ Atuaia on the Warriors' 15.

But Kahuku's offense was able to move the ball only one yard and lost it on downs.

Kamehameha then assembled a 13-play, 86-yard scoring drive capped by Kamano's 27-yard TD pass to tight end Rylee Urasaki with 5:40 remaining in the half, and Kevin Doo's fourth extra point made it 28-0.

Kamano was 7 of 10 for 102 yards in the first half, and Ho added 106 yards rushing on eight carries. The Warriors outgained the Red Raiders 225 yards to 42 in the first two quarters.

"We just did what we did during practice, and we had good blocking," said Ho, a 5-foot-7, 155-pound junior. "The team blocked great."

Kamehameha's defense, meanwhile, displayed tremendous team speed as Kahuku often seemed one step behind.

"They played us man (coverage) and shut down our corners," Red Raiders coach Reggie Torres said. "My spotter (in the press box) would say, 'It's (the opening) there!' But then they would just close in. They just outplayed us."

Five of Kahuku's first six first downs came via Warriors penalties, which appeared to be their only weak spot last night. Kamehameha was flagged nine times for 104 yards.

Ho added a 71-yard scoring run with 2:08 left in the game.

"A lot of players stepped up with big plays," Warriors coach David Stant said. "Kahuku might have treated this like a 'preseason' game, but we didn't. This is how we gotta play all the time."

The Red Raiders started three sophomores on the offensive line, including a backup who was called into action due to a last-minute injury. Kahuku also substituted freely at quarterback and running back throughout the game.

"Execution-wise, we made a lot of mistakes," Torres said. "It's a process, but we can't be like this very long because our (O'ahu Interscholastic Association) season starts next week."
