Hilo falls in softball championship

Santo Domingo, of the Dominican Republic, scored two runs in the seventh inning to knock off Hilo RBI, 3-1, and claim the championship at the 2008 Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) World Series in Compton, Calif., yesterday.
The softball tournament, which featured eight teams, was made up of players age 19 and under.
Hilo finished the tourney 5 -1.
"I told them I'm proud of them," Hilo coach James Hirayama said in a story on MLB.com. "They're telling me they're sorry but I'm telling them there's nothing to be sorry about when you put everything out there."
Hilo beat Jersey City (8-0) and Tampa (10-9) in playoff games to qualify for the title game.
SURFING
MOORE TOP PERFORMER AT GIRLS-ONLY CONTEST
Carissa Moore of Honolulu was the standout surfer of the Sea Hawaii Girls Who Surf Pro-Am contest over the weekend.
After winning the prestigious junior pro division on Saturday, Moore added three more division titles yesterday.
The two-day contest — for females only — wrapped up yesterday in 2- to 5-foot waves at Kewalo Basin.
Moore, 15 and a junior-to-be at Punahou School, won the pro longboard, pro shortboard and FLHI Girls trick divisions yesterday. She won $2,100 over the two days of competition.
Alessa Quizon of Makaha placed second to Moore in the junior pro, pro shortboard, and FLHI Girls trick divisions, and received a total of $1,100.
Other division winners were Candice Appleby (stand-up paddle), Ashley Ahina (amateur longboard), Cristina DeLima (amateur bodyboard), Shrutti Greenwood (amateur shortboard) and Leina'ala Hall (novice).

HAWAI'I AMERICAN LEGION SQUAD WINS
Bryson Chang went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored as Hawai'i beat New Mexico, 8-4, yesterday in the American Legion Baseball Western Region Tournament in Surprise, Ariz.
The Hawai'i team will face Las Vegas today.
