Kalani coach Lee honored

Kalani High tennis coach Matt Lee has been awarded the 2008 Multicultural USTA Tennis Teachers Conference and Arthur Ashe Kids Day Moderator Scholarship. The USTA provides funds to cover expenses for deserving multicultural coaches to attend the conference and assist with Arthur Ashe Kids Day.
Lee has been teaching and coaching tennis at the grassroots level for more than 30 years. His success with youth and adult programs at the public park, high schools and adult education classes makes him one of the Hawai'i Pacific Section's leaders in player development.
Patrick McEnroe, general manager of USTA Elite Player Development and captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team, will be the opening session speaker at the conference, which will be held in New York during the U.S. Open.

TWO EARN U.S. BERTHS
Wailuku's Desiree Ting and Sarah Phillips-Durst, from Tallahassee, Fla., will be Hawai'i's representatives at the 22nd annual U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.
Ting shot 1-under 71 last Saturday at The Dunes at Maui Lani to lead the six qualifiers. Bobbi Kokx was second, with an 80, but declined her spot due to schedule conflicts. Phillips, who shot 83, accepted the second qualifying spot.
The national championship, for women 25 and older, will be Sept. 6 to 11 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
