TODAYS MUST-SEES

Democratic convention, 4 p.m. ABC, CBS, NBC and more. The next two Thursdays are crucial ones for voters. We'll see the major presidential candidates shape their messages. Tonight is Barack Obama in a unique setting. Instead of a convention hall, his speech will be in a stadium, Invesco Field. That's in Denver, where many cable channels — plus network news and morning shows — have been based all week. Officially, coverage starts at noon on CNN, 1 p.m. on MSNBC, 2 p.m. on PBS, 3:45 p.m. on Fox News Channel.

"Grey's Anatomy," 8 p.m., ABC. As the strike ended, this show was back in action while its spin-off ("Private Practice") was in for repairs. That made it possible for Addison (Kate Walsh) to return briefly. She arrives to perform surgery — and is stunned by all the personal changes. More are coming, as Ava returns.

OF NOTE

Football, 1 p.m., NBC. The Jacksonville Jaguars visit the Washington Redskins. If the game runs late, NBC will have to decide between a meaningless pre-season game and a meaningful election.

"The Color Purple" (1985), 5 p.m., repeats at 8:30 p.m., WE. On paper, this is a deeply bitter story of black women facing bad men and hardship. On screen, this Steven Spielberg film has splendid visuals, music and actors. The cast includes Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover and more.

"The Cheetah Girls: One World," 7 p.m., Disney Channel. After debuting last weekend, this musical is back. It has a weak story, peppy songs and (in India) pretty settings.

"Ugly Betty," 7 p.m., ABC. Renee is convinced Betty is in love with Daniel. Meanwhile, Betty's sister Hilda is unhappy: Gina Gambarro wants to flaunt her new marriage and wealth.
