Hawai'i Pacific University graduate student Ramona Ferreyra was one of 250 students nationwide selected to attend the 2008 FBI Honors Internship Program in Washington, D.C., this summer. Ferreyra is a Master of Arts candidate in diplomacy and military studies and is completing her summer internship at the FBI Office of Public Affairs.
Only individuals with strong academic credentials, outstanding character, a high degree of motivation and willingness to represent the FBI upon returning to their respective campuses are selected.
The program offers undergraduate and graduate students an insider's view of daily FBI operations and provides the opportunity to explore career opportunities.
The Hawai'i FBI Field Office is accepting new applications for the 2009 FBI HIP. All applications must be completed and received by Oct. 4, 2008.

Alvin T. Onaka received the Halbert L. Dunn Award at the 75th annual meeting of the National Association for Public Health Statistics and Information Systems in Orlando, Fla. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of vital and health statistics. Onaka was recognized for his demographic and public health career that spans more than 40 years at the international, national and state level. Currently, Onaka is the state registrar of vital statistics and chief of the Office of Health Status Monitoring for the state Department of Health.
Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann was recently given a City Livability Award for Outstanding Achievement by the U.S. Conference of Mayors at its annual meeting. The award recognized the city's vision and leadership in revitalizing Honolulu's historic Chinatown to attract artists and new businesses, while preserving the neighborhood's unique culture.
Members of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa faculty and staff have been honored as 2008 recipients of campus awards for their excellence in teaching, research and service.
The Regents' Medal for Excellence in Teaching went to:

Kerry Laiana Wong, assistant professor, Hawai'inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge.
The Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching is named for the late Frances Davis, who taught mathematics at Leeward Community College and UH-Manoa for 19 years. It is awarded to junior faculty for their dedication to teaching, demonstrated excellence as teachers, and attention to undergraduate students. The 2008 award recipients are:

The Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community was established in 1997 to recognize faculty members who have made significant contributions that strengthen the ties between the university and the community. The 2008 award recipients are:

Stephen Meder, associate professor, School of Architecture.
The Robert W. Clopton Award for Outstanding Service to the Community honors a Manoa faculty member who has played a socially significant role by applying intellectual leadership and academic expertise to the improvement of the community. The 2008 award recipient is Jane Kadohiro, assistant professor, School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.
The University of Hawai'i at Manoa Chancellor's Citation for Meritorious Teaching is awarded to Manoa campus faculty members for significant contributions to teaching and student learning. The 2008 award recipients are:
