WAI'ANAE — Wai'anae set the tone early with a strong kickoff return to start the game en route to a 34-0 win against Kapolei last night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West season opener at Raymond Torii Field.

The Seariders (1-2 overall, 1-0 West) prevented an 0-3 start with a stifling defense that limited the Hurricanes (1-2, 0-1) to 112 yards in offense. Only twice Kapolei's offense crossed midfield; it fumbled away the ball the first time and lost the ball on downs the second. The Hurricanes' deepest penetration was to the Seariders' 25.

"It was a big question for us, losing the way we did the first two (nonleague) games," Wai'anae coach Dan Matsumoto said. "There was pressure on the coaching staff. It was nice to have this win. It was good for the team."

"Our community was pushing us to win tonight," Wai'anae defensive lineman Wade Keli'ikipi said. "We just tried to keep our heads clear and play our best."

Humongous fullback Eleu Wilson, wearing a lineman's number (93), plunged for four 1-yard TD runs to lead the Seariders' offense. The 6-foot, 290-pound junior, who had 58 yards on 12 carries, was too much for the Hurricanes' defense to handle. Already playing without linemen Luke Spencer (6-3, 260) and Chad Lopati (6-2, 245), Kapolei could not contain the powerful Wilson, nor the fleet-footed Danny Kekoanui, who led with 75 yards on 16 carries.

"We were pretty deflated last week when Lopati (knee) got hurt," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "He's out and Luke Spencer's (groin/hamstring) out. They're mainstays of our D-Line. But make no mistake about it: They ran us over."

The Seariders wasted little time in taking control of the game. Guyson Amina returned the opening kickoff 57 yards to the Kapolei 42 and quarterback Keoni Napierala-Rose's 30-yard pass to Shawn Asberry on first down highlighted the four-play scoring drive that ended with Wilson's first 1-yard TD run.

Amina's 23-yard punt return to the Kapolei 48 later in the quarter set up the Seariders' second score by Wilson that capped an eight-play drive (all runs) to make it 14-0 in the first quarter.

The Seariders scored again midway through the second quarter, driving 70 yards in nine plays, capped by Wilson's third TD to make it 21-0.

Napierala-Rose broke Wilson's streak with 2:20 left in the half, when he rolled left and cut back up the middle for a two-yard TD run. Terrence Akao missed his first PAT, keeping the score 27-0 at the half.

The Seariders milked the last 8:50 of the third quarter and scored four seconds into the fourth quarter on Wilson's fourth TD to make it 34-0.

The Seariders' defense, which limited the Hurricanes to just eight first downs — three by penalties — had its way against the Hurricanes. Quarterback Noah Pascua had more yards rushing (48) than passing (47). Running back Cyril Ontai had the biggest play for the Hurricanes with a 37-yard run.

"We got lucky on a couple of plays," Matsumoto said. "There were some drops (missed passes by Kapolei). We're still not sound as we want to be on defense."

But it's early in the season in a division that figures to go down to the final week for playoff berths.

"It's not the end of the world for us," Kapolei's Hernandez said. "It's a long season. We're hopeful we can regroup and come back. It's almost strange to be talking playoffs now with this loss, but if we can get to the playoffs and these guys (Lopati and Spencer) can come back healthy, hopefully, we'll be able to turn it around."
