UH-Hilo topples Charleston

Mary Claire Bolo and Kaniu Hernandez each had 14 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo beat visiting Charleston (W. Va.), 25-7, 25-12, 24-26, 25-13, last night in a Hawaiian Style Classic women's volleyball match at the UHH gym.

Josimara Pinheiro added 13 kills for Hilo, which improved to 3-0.

Laura Buckalew led Charleston (0-3) with seven kills.

In Hawai'i Invitational play yesterday:

  • Keisha Moeai had 12 kills, and Agnes Tuilevuka and Losaline Faka'osi each added 10 as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), 25-16, 25-11, 25-16, at the Cannon Activities Center.

    LeeAnn Mapu had 31 assists for BYUH (2-2), which hit .291. Gina Conley had six kills for Embry-Riddle.

    Earlier in the day, Fei Shi had 17 kills as Cal Baptist swept BYUH, 25-12, 25-12, 25-21, to improve to 7-0.

    Agnes Tuilevuka and Ane Vea each had six kills for the Seasiders.

  • Fei Shi hammered 21 kills as Cal Baptist swept Hawai'i Pacific, 25-20, 25-22, 25-22, at Blaisdell Arena. Aimee Tresierra led HPU (1-3) with 13 kills.

    Earlier in the day, Anne-Marie Hofmans had eight kills as Cal Poly Pomona defeated HPU, 25-16, 25-19, 15-25, 25-16.

    Rafaela Rosa added 21 digs for Pomona (3-1). Phoebe Hettel had eight kills and Tricia Yoshimura 14 digs for HPU.

  • Nikki Scott had 13 kills as Nebraska-Kearney defeated Chaminade, 25-14, 25-21, 25-18, at McCabe gym.

    Cola Svec had 38 assists for Nebraska-Kearney (3-1). Trina Kauliakamoa had nine kills and six digs, and Courtney Lorusso added eight kills and six digs for Chaminade (1-3).

    HILO MEN PREVAIL

    Mark Medina and Drew Geis scored early goals and Omar Garcia capped the scoring late in the game as the Hawai'i-Hilo men's team beat host Cal State San Bernardino, 3-1, yesterday.

    Hilo improved to 1-1.

    Medina scored his first career goal after eight passes moved the ball back-and-forth across the field before Medina got the ball on the weak left side for the shot. Geis' goal came off a header from Gene Okamura's throw-in.

    Elsewhere yesterday:

  • Justin Linthicum and Nicholas Kettlety scored goals as Texas Permian Basin beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 2-0. BYUH fell to 0-2.

  • Ross Middlemiss had two goals and an assist as Sonoma State beat Chaminade, 6-1. Chad Thompson scored for Chaminade (0-1).

  • Daniele Ayala scored in the 89th minute as Washburn (Kan.) defeated host Hawai'i Pacific, 2-1. Katrina Torres scored for HPU.

  • Alexica Bosque scored two goals as Sonoma State defeated host Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 4-1. Kahanu Ah Puck scored for BYUH (1-1).

  • Brandy Watts scored three goals as Texas Permian Basin beat Chaminade, 3-1. Marissa Faye scored a goal and Marissa Minor made six saves for Chaminade (0-1).
