City lifeguard Bouvey Bradbury will be awarded the Honolulu Fire Department's civilian Medal of Valor on Thursday for a Wai'anae Coast rescue.

The civilian Medal of Valor is given to those who distinguish themselves by means of outstanding bravery and at the risk of their own lives. It is the highest honor HFD can bestow upon a member of the public.

Bradbury was off-duty when he jumped into turbulent surf on Jan. 18 to rescue a military man swept out to sea, HFD said. Bradbury located the man, pulled him from an underwater cave, and brought him to shore.

The department will also be presenting Certificates of Commendation to others who assisted at fires and medical emergencies during ceremonies at HFD's Charles H. Thurston Training Center, 890 Valkenburgh St., at 9 a.m.
