WASHINGTON — A new interactive online collection of National Archives' World War II records will be launched Friday to commemorate the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

The collection will include the first interactive online site for the USS Arizona Memorial, interactive memorial pages of World War II service members and millions of war photographs and documents previously unavailable on the Internet.

The project is a partnership of the National Archives and Records Administration and www.Footnote.com, a historical document archive site. The site will be accessed through www.Footnote.com, but the exact URL is yet to be announced.

"Footnote.com is inviting anyone to come and find a particular person (who served in World War II) or they can even create a page ... and put up information about that person," said Laura Diachenko, spokeswoman for the National Archives.

www.Footnote.com is a subscription Web site that features original historical documents that are searchable on the Internet but will offer full access to the collection for free through December, said Justin Schroepfer, the site's marketing director.

The National Archives is responsible for safeguarding all federal government records.
