Give Wayne Sato credit for admitting who deserves the credit in winning the Pigskin Picks contest.
"My strategy is leave it up to my wife (Gerilee). This is her project. She made it a goal to win," said Sato, of Honolulu. "All I'm responsible for is purchasing a couple papers in the area, get some from the office, and driving her to Zippy's to drop them off."
Said Gerilee: "You know how much money we waste on newspapers?"
The Sato ballot correctly picked the winners of 14 of 15 games. Sato's tiebreaker differential of 10 yards edged Chuck Otsuka by a yard as a handful tied with 14-1 records.
"Normally, I look at the odds, but this is the first week I didn't look, which is weird," Gerilee said. "I just guessed this week. Normally I ask him (for his input), but this time I didn't, which was better."
Gerilee did employ a strategy to determine her combined total offensive yardage for the Hawai'i-Washington State football game.
"That, I kind of used a method," she said. "I looked at yardage at last week's (UH) game against Idaho, so I figured Washington State was junkier than them. So that was my thinking. I think I gave them (UH) a couple more yards. "
Technically, Wayne wins a trip for two to Las Vegas and $500. Will he take his wife?
"Yeah, absolutely," he said.
