The revelry of military parties around O'ahu on Dec. 6, 1941, and the devastation that broke the calm of Island life the next morning will be remembered in a series of events this weekend at Pearl Harbor on the 67th anniversary of the attack that launched America into World War II.

Two years after it opened, the Pacific Aviation Museum-Pearl Harbor is holding a "Hangar Dance" fundraiser tomorrow on Ford Island, re-creating some of the Big Band dances that were held the night before the attack.

Among those whose lives would do a 180-degree flip-flop were 2nd Lts. George Welch and Ken Taylor, who were at a Christmas party on Dec. 6 and the next morning were fighting back from the cockpits of their Curtiss P-40 Warhawks.

More than 2,000 people are expected to attend a memorial service hosted by the National Park Service and U.S. Navy on Pearl Harbor's Kilo Pier, opposite of the USS Arizona Memorial.

The theme of this year's commemoration is "Pacific War Memories: The Heroic Response to Pearl Harbor" and will reflect on the brave efforts at sea, on land and in the air to turn the tide in the Pacific.

The National Park Service and the U.S. Navy will host a joint memorial ceremony commemorating the 67th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Thomas C. Griffin, Doolittle Raider, and Adm. Robert F. Willard, Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, will serve as the keynote speakers. Highlights will include music by the U.S. Pacific Fleet Band, morning colors, a Hawaiian blessing, a rifle salute by members of the U.S. Marine Corps, wreath observations and echo taps. The Pearl Harbor-based destroyer, USS Chung-Hoon will render honors and military aircraft will perform a flyover.

Public Access to the Pearl Harbor 67th Anniversary Commemoration

The commemoration is free of charge, and a limited number of seats are open to the general public. Due to strict security measures on Naval Station Pearl Harbor, only invited guests will be allowed on base in their vehicles. General public wishing to attend the commemoration will be required to board U.S. Navy boats departing from the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center, which will transport guests to the commemoration site at Kilo Pier. Seats for the general public on the U.S. Navy boats to the commemoration are limited, and available on a first-come-first-served basis. The first U.S. Navy boat for the general public will depart from the Visitor Center at 6:20 a.m., and the last boat will depart at 7 a.m.
