Big Island police today identified the motorcyclist who died Saturday from injuries sustained in a crash as Vincent G. Marcuccella, 52, of Pahoa.
An autopsy is scheduled tomorrow to determine cause and manner of death.
The crash occurred on Leilani Avenue, five-tenths of a mile west of Pohoiki Road in Puna's Leilani Estates Subdivision, according to Traffic Enforcement Unit investigations a supervisor Sgt. Christopher D. Gali. Police were called at 4:08 p.m.
Marcuccella was operating a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle westbound on Leilani Avenue when he apparently lost control, crossed the centerline and collided with a utility pole, police said. The operator, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported by Fire Rescue personnel to the Hilo Medical Center where he died at 7:15 p.m.
Speed and/or alcohol do not appear to be factors, police said.
The death is the Big Island's 26th traffic fatality of 2008 and the eighth involving a motorcyclist. Twenty of Hawai'i's 100 traffic fatalities this year have been motorcyclists.
