Fishing ban planned for part of Waikiki coast

The state of Hawai'i is banning fishing for one year along part of the Waikiki shoreline.
The closed area runs from the Ewa wall of the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium to the Diamond Head Lighthouse.
Department of Land and Natural Resources Chairwoman Laura Thielen says that while this part of the coast is popular, it needs to be closed every odd-numbered year to allow nearshore marine life populations to replenish.
Fishing in that area will be punishable with a petty misdemeanor or administrative fine beginning Jan. 1.
