Motorcyclist killed in Puna crash identified
Big Island police yesterday identified a motorcyclist who died Saturday from injuries sustained in a crash as Vincent G. Marcuccella, 52, of Pahoa.
An autopsy is scheduled today to determine cause and manner of death.
The crash occurred on Leilani Avenue, five-tenths mile west of Pohoiki Road in Puna's Leilani Estates subdivision, according to Traffic Enforcement Unit investigations supervisor Sgt. Christopher D. Gali.
Police were called at 4:08 p.m.
Marcuccella was riding a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle west-bound on Leilani Avenue when he apparently lost control, crossed the centerline and struck a utility pole, police said. Marcuccella , who was not wearing a helmet, was taken by the fire department to Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 7:15 p.m.
Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors, police said.
The death is the Big Island's 26th traffic fatality of 2008 and the eighth involving a motorcyclist. Twenty of Hawai'i's 100 traffic fatalities this year have been motorcyclists.
