Storm system finally moving out

Advertiser Staff

The worst of the rain is over, a lead forecaster at the National Weather Service said, so even if you peek out the window this morning and see some scattered showers, know they won't last today.

"We'll see quite a bit better weather today," said Robert Ballard, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service. "We'll see some sunshine today. Winds will be variable but lighter. The storm system is moving away."

From 2 p.m. yesterday to 2 a.m., at least an inch of rain fell across all of O'ahu with most rain gauges, Ballard said. From 2 to 5 a.m., all areas had less than an inch of rainfall at most.

Ballard also confirmed a tornado struck Kaua'i yesterday near Makaweli and Pakala.

An emergency manager reported a water spout coming to shore.

"Whenever a spout touches land, it's considered a tornado," Ballard said. "It's pretty unusual here, but it happens."
