A 45-year-old Maui man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after he allegedly shot and killed his 19-year-old son Tuesday night.

Joe D. Antonio, 45, of Kahului, surrendered at the Wailuku Police Station at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Maui police.

During an interview with homicide detectives, Antonio told them he shot his son, Jose Antonio Jr., who lived at the same address, following an argument, police said.

Joe D. Antonio has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The preliminary results of the autopsy indicated that Jose Antonio Jr. died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to police and the Maui Medical Examiner's Office.

At about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday night, Maui police officers responded to 496 South Kamehameha Ave. in Kahului after dispatchers received a 911 call of "shots fired," police said.

The caller told police that someone had been shot and the responsible person had fled the area in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, police officers discovered the younger man, who appeared to have been shot several times and was lying on the ground, in front of the entrance to the rear cottage, police said.

He died at the scene.

According to witnesses, the incident was a result of an argument, police said.

The weapon used was identified as a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun, which was found at the scene and later recovered as evidence. The weapon is registered to Joe D. Antonio, police said.

The incident remains under investigation, police said.
