H-1 North-South bypass to be rerouted Dec. 29-30

Advertiser Staff

The H-1 Freeway North-South Road Bypass between Kunia and Makakilo will be permanently rerouted back onto the H-1 Freeway over two nights next Monday and Tuesday.

Honolulu-bound traffic will be redirected from the eastbound bypass from 8:30 p.m. Monday to 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. During the transition hours, two lanes in the eastbound direction will be closed.

Waianae-bound traffic will be redirected from the westbound bypass from 9:30 p.m. Tuesday to 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. During the transition hours, two lanes in the westbound direction will be closed.

The temporary bypass route, which has been in operation since June 21, was built to keep traffic flowing around the construction site of the future North-South Road Overpass. Once construction of the overpass is completed, the bypass ramps will be integrated into the final interchange ramp design to minimize the overall cost and construction needed.

The North-South Road project constructs a new six-lane highway connecting Kapolei Parkway, Farrington Highway, and H-1. The $143 million project is being built in three phases.

The H-1 Freeway bypass route is part of Phase 1C, which will construct a new diamond interchange at the freeway and the connection to Farrington Highway. The remaining work on Phase 1C involves finalizing the North South Road Interchange and completing the connection from North South Road to Farrington Highway.

Construction for Phase 1C is anticipated to be complete in September 2009.

Special duty officers will be on site 24 hours a day for the first week of the transition as drivers become accustomed to the changeover. Electronic message boards will be deployed throughout the area. Motorists are advised to use caution driving through the area and to allow for extra travel time.
