Power outage does not disrupt Obama's routine

Advertiser Staff and White House press pool reports

President-elect Barack Obama's routine was uninterrupted by the island-wide power outage Friday evening allowing Obama and his family to workout first thing this morning.

The power outage that began Friday evening continued into Saturday morning but power was restored to much of Kailua, where President-elect Obama is staying, at roughly 6 a.m.

"Power went out during the 7 o'clock hour last evening at the residence in Kailua where the President-elect and his family are staying," said Ben LaBolt, Obama's spokesman. "Power was restored to the residence during the 6 o'clock hour this morning. The Obama family is grateful for the offers of assistance from local officials."

By 7:48 a.m. Hawaii time, after the usual short drive, he arrived at the Semper Fit Center on Marine Corps Base Hawaii. With Obama was Michelle Obama and Chicago friends Valerie Jarrett, Eric Whitaker and Martin Nesbit, according to the White House press pool report.

Michelle Obama and Valerie Jarrett left Semper Fit Center at 8:48 a.m., an hour after they'd entered; the men -- President-elect Obama and friends Eric Whitaker and Martin Nesbitt left about 16 minutes later, according to the report.

About 30 people waited to see him, and the earliest arrivals stayed through a brief rain shower.

The Secret Service agents had subjected all to the weapons-detecting wand.

When Obama emerged, his Chicago White Sox cap backwards, he briefly flashed the "shaka," according to a couple residents in the pool van, who say the gesture connotes "hey there," "hang loose" or "thanks, dude".

Obama righted his cap as he walked toward the assembled group in the parking lot and loudly called, "How are you?"

He moved from left to right down the line that was about three deep, saying variously "How are you?," "Good to see you," "Nice to see you."

He lofted four babies and posed for pictures with them. After about two minutes he went to the SUV and the motorcade returned to the Kailua neighborhood where he is staying, according to the pool report.
