Nordstrom stepping it up with shoes and beyond

 •  A sneak peek inside Nordstrom Ala Moana

By Paula Rath

Island residents know Nordstrom best by its shoes.

The specialty retailer has been in the shoe business in Hawai'i for 40 years, running the Liberty House shoe department until 1997, then opening a standalone shoe store in Ward Centre and a Nordstrom Rack store nearby.

When Nordstrom Ala Moana opens on March 7, however, its shoe departments — yes, that's plural — will top any of the department store's past offerings. There are five shoe departments, covering one-third of an acre of retail space. Three of those departments, and a similar percentage of their shoes, are for women, since 75 percent of Nordstrom's shoppers are female.

If you were to stack the Ala Moana Center Nordstrom's shoe boxes on top of each other, the stack would be five miles high.

But shoes are not the whole story of what Nordstrom will add to Honolulu's retail mix. The Seattle-based department store chain, known for its commitment to customer service, will bring some service innovations to Island shoppers. Here are a few:

  • Alterations: A staff of 14 alterationists will offer one-hour and one-day service, aiming to meet nearly any request. Industrial sewing machines, sergers and steamers that look like tanning booths stand ready for action.

  • Local designers: In clothing, Anne Namba and Fighting Eel will have a presence; in jewelry, Stan Shinkawa; in fragrance and beauty, Malie and Saffron James. The Gelato Bar will serve the Italian-style treat produced by Maurice Grasso of the Kaka'ako Gelateria.

  • Lingerie: A staff of fit specialists will assist women with bra sizes 30AA to 42JJ. The department will also offer prothesis products and services for women who require fit assistance following breast surgery.

  • Beauty services: Manicures and pedicures with Deborah Lippmann products will be offered, as well as facials, brow treatments and other grooming services (for men and women) in private facial rooms.

  • Savvy: A department devoted to of-the-moment trends and cutting-edge designers just appearing in national fashion mags such as Vogue and Elle. Among the current offerings are Karta, L.A.M.B. by Gwen Stefani, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Vince and Tory Burch.
