Freeway repaving set for Sunday

Advertiser Staff

Motorists traveling west-bound on H-1 Freeway tomorrow night are being advised that there will be two fewer lanes available to them as they travel from the airport viaduct to Waikele.

State transportation crews will be deploying the H-1 Zipper Lane to make way for resurfacing work that night, state transportation spokesman Scott Ishikawa said.

The Zipper Lane, although in formation, will not available to the public until about 5:30 a.m. Monday as usual to help with morning rush-hour going east-bound.

Crews will begin the deployment from the airport end of the Zipper Lane at about 5:30 p.m. and should reach the Waikele area about 9 p.m., Ishikawa said.

The move will accommodate repaving work on the Waikele section, and a Sunday was chosen because there is typically less traffic than on a weekday, thus less inconvenience to motorists, Ishikawa said. A similar action is planned for Feb. 24.

"We have to move the Zipper blocks ... so we can pave that section of road," he said. "And these blocks are 1,500 pounds and we need the Zipmobile to move them out of the way."

Ishikawa said state officials do not believe there will be any conflicts or problems in connection with tomorrow's Pro Bowl. The game is expected to end about 3 p.m., and the Zipmobile won't reach the 'Aiea-Halawa portion of the freeway until about 7 p.m., he said.

The resurfacing began last week and is expected to last through June.
