KEY HOUSE VOTES

1. Economic stimulus package

The House voted, 380-34, to pass the economic stimulus package Thursday just after the Senate passed its version. It will cost an estimated $157.7 billion in the next fiscal year. The bill will provide rebate checks to millions of Americans, including seniors and disabled veterans. Not included was heating aid for the poor or tax breaks for the home building and energy industries.

2. Higher-education extension

The House voted 354-58 Thursday to pass a five-year extension of the Higher Education Act, which governs universities and federal financial aid. The bill increases the amount of information schools and lenders must give to students who want to borrow and penalizes states that cut back on their higher-education contributions. The House and the Senate will now have towork out the differences between their two different bills.

KEY SENATE VOTES

1. Economic stimulus package

The Senate voted 81-16 Thursday to pass a $170 million economic stimulus package that would send checks to millions of Americans, including Social Security beneficiaries and disabled veterans. The rebates would range from $300 to $1,200, depending on income. The bill did not include an unemployment extension. The House passed the bill, 380-34, and it now goes to the president for his signature.
