The Kamehameha boys soccer team won its second state championship after beating 'Iolani on penalty kicks last night.

The Warriors earned the 2-1 win after outshooting the Raiders 4-2 in penalty kicks in the JN Automotive Group/HHSAA Boys State Division I Soccer Championships at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Kamehameha junior defender Kainoa Kahui, senior defender/midfielder Zane Dydasco, junior forward Gareth Gomez and sophomore midfielder Ryan Ho made their shots. Warriors goalkeeper Micah Swain blocked one shot and one 'Iolani kicker missed.

'Iolani sophomore midfielder Jershon Baldomero and junior midfielder Brock Granger made their kicks and goalkeeper Christopher Otani made one save. The final 'Iolani shooter did not take his kick.

As expected it was a close game between the familiar teams. In their previous two meetings in the regular season they tied, 0-0 and 1-1.

Senior midfielder Kimo Komomua scored in the sixth minute to give the Warriors the early lead. Gomez took the ball up the right side and crossed it. The ball bounced off the goalkeeper to Komomua, who was waiting in front of the goal, and he shot it between the goalkeeper's legs and into the goal.

'Iolani senior forward Blaine Gonsalves tied the score in the 49th minute on a play started on a free kick by Granger. Granger passed the ball to junior defender Reid Sakamoto, who passed it back to Granger. Granger then touched it to Gonsalves, who blasted a left-footed low shot into the goal from about 20 yards out.

A few minutes later, Gonsalves broke free down the left side and crossed the ball to sophomore forward Keith Lum running on the back door. Lum's shot got past goalkeeper Swain, but was stopped on a sliding save by Dydasco.

After the 80-minute regulation ended in 1-1 tie, the teams still couldn't gain any advantage through two 10-minute sudden victory overtime periods.

Kamehameha's Dydasco had a chance to be the hero again — his free kick in the semifinals tied the game against Kamehameha-Maui and sent it into overtime — when the Warriors received a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. But Dydasco's low curving free kick missed wide left with no time left on the clock, sending the game into a penalty-kick shootout.

THIRD PLACE

Mililani 1, Kamehameha-Maui 0: Michael Anduha scored in the 79th minute to lift the Trojans.

FIFTH PLACE

Kealakehe 1, Kaiser 0: Morgan Ynigues scored in the 71st minute to win it for the Waveriders.

CONSOLATION CHAMPIONSHIP

Baldwin 5, Castle 0: Michael Marrs (25th and 67th minutes), John Takitani (41st), Kuaika Raboy (54th) and Jentzen Motooka (79th) scored for the Bears.
